Welcome to the Picky Directory. It is great to have you here! If this is your first time visiting our website, you might be wondering who runs this site, and what our goals are. Well here is some information for you.
How the Picky Directory Started
Picky Directory was born out of the frustration that many webmasters feel in the Web 2.0 era. Here we are, many years into the Internet running most aspects of our human lives, and there are still very few quality web directories to choose from.
Even with technology giants like Google and Microsoft relying on the editorial opinions of web directories as they craft their search engine algorithms, there really aren’t more than a few good ones out there. If anything, some of the great ones have gone horribly wrong.
We have DMOZ, and the Yahoo Directory, which have both been around for ages, yet these are both chalk full of dead sites and dropped domains, or are extremely difficult to get in touch with (or extremely expensive and thus out of reach for many webmasters).
There is also Best of the Web and JoeAnt, which are probably the two best run web directories out there right now. The search engines seem to agree, as both these sites continue to grow stronger in the way they offer listings “rank juice.”
Anyway, the Picky Directory aims to be one of the top 10 most reliable web directories out there… someday.
The “Picky” Approach and What it Means
The question becomes, “How can a web directory earn respect on the Internet?” Well, we have a pretty good idea, and it’s nothing too secret. We aim to list any authoritative and/or quality web resource in existence. That’s it.
Seriously? Yes seriously. We have certain criteria that we look for when approving websites, but our main concern is that if it is a useful, original resource on the web, then it deserves a place in our directory.
At the end of the day, if we as a directory are not truly pursuing all the greatest web resources for inclusion, and labeling them with as much accuracy as possible, then eventually it will negatively affect us, and all websites we choose to list. More than anything, we strive to distinguish ourselves from other directories that charge outrageous prices, or worse, allow politics and grudges to get in the way.
We aim to maintain this philosophy by keeping our site suggestion fees FREE, or at least very cheap as we grow in the future. Additionally, we have developed a simple list of requirements and factors that we look for, as described here.
Technical Information about Picky Directory
Many of our visitors wonder why we don’t use a typical “link directory” platform or CMS. The answer is that we don’t like them. We prefer an insane level of cleanliness and organizational structure, which we found in WordPress. We know its not common, and we will keep our options open in the future, but for now we love it. Above all, we desire a “human approach” to not only our editorial decisions, but also in how our visitors suggest their websites – so we didn’t really think a “choose your own category and pay now” system would accomplish that.
Our website was designed by Jejani Media with inspiration from Pritam P Hans.
